Lady Riders enjoy last meet of year

A local motorbike enthusiast who set up an all-women’s motorcycle group has hosted her last event of the year.

Laura Suhajda set up Selby Lady Riders in spring last year after seeing a need for a group of its kind in the area. She explained: “Having been a member of organisations such as the Women’s International Motorcycle Association (WIMA) and national group Curvy Riders for a long time, I decided that Selby needed a group where women could come together and spend time doing what they love. “Since we set up in springtime last year, the group has grown to 120 members on Facebook, with many coming along on our regular ride-outs and forming friendships with one another.” For the group’s last event of the year, Laura and three other members planned a coffee morning at Brayton Community Centre last weekend, which was attended by 33 women.

Along with Laura’s home-baked treats, visitors of the centre heard from make-up artists, who gave the women tips and tricks on how to maintain a fresh look while on the motorbikes, a paramedic, who went through first-aid, specifically for motorcycle incidents and the Riding Team, who spoke about the mental health benefits of riding motorcycles. The group were also entertained with a series of live performances. Laura said: “This has been the first event we have hosted of its kind with the group. “It’s been a good taster and we hope to hold similar ones every year. “We usually stop riding in the late Autumn and begin in early Spring, so we are excited to see what next year brings.” For more information on joining the group, please join the ‘Selby Lady Riders’ group on Facebook.
